High-Integrity Opportunities Under Development

Project - Howard County, TX

Marginal Oil Wells in Howard County, TX - Methane Abatement & Land Stewardship Initiative.

Methane Zero is partnering with one operator and three private landowners in Howard County, Texas to restore land affected by aging oil and gas infrastructure. This collaboration focuses on 17 orphaned and low-production wells that, without intervention, would continue emitting methane and occupying valuable agricultural and grazing land for decades.

Howard County’s economy depends heavily on responsible land use — farming, ranching, and water stewardship that sustain both livelihoods and ecosystems. These 17 wells pose persistent risks to soil health, groundwater quality, and air integrity. By working directly with local landowners and the well operator, Methane Zero is coordinating the safe, permanent plugging of each well and independent verification of methane abatement results.

Once complete, the project will eliminate a significant source of greenhouse gas emissions, restore productive acreage for agricultural use, and generate verified carbon credits that finance continued environmental management. Beyond the climate benefits, the effort creates local contracting and field-work opportunities while strengthening the long-term sustainability of West Texas lands.
